'Learning to love your Smart Device'
This is a package for members new to using an iPad, iPhone or Android tablet or phone. The 'apps' listed are also available for Android devices.
One of our mentors, Heather W, considers an important first stage in developing skills is to 'learn to love your (eg) iPad' by getting to know a few apps - such as a card game; the weather app and the Fire warning app - really well.
'Aileen' on Learning to love your iPad (or other new Apple or Android device)
Not long after Heather said this at a mentors meeting I came across Aileen, who clearly loved her iPad, so asked her what had led her to become so attached to her iPad.
Aileen agreed with the weather app 'Weatherzone+' and 'FireReady'; then suggested two birdwatching apps 'Wetland Birds' & 'VIC Field Guide' and jigsaw puzzles such as 'Jigsaw HD'
Overall, Aileen said word puzzles are her favourites. She suggested, and worked me through, two word puzzles which I now play regularly. Bonza and Bonza National Geographic (available for iPads and Android).
The Card Games Solitaire and Mahjong are also great favourites of 'A' and many U3A iPad users. Some simple card games are usually preinstalled on tablets and there are many free apps as well.
'Words with Friends'
Lorraine K suggested 'Words with Friends' for our 'Grandparents Package'. An avid player, Lorraine was told about Words with Friends by a ...... and now plays words with Friends with him regularly online.
Members who decide to use 'Words with Friends' are in very good company. 'Words with Friends' is recommended in all of the articles found recently discussing the best apps for seniors.
